A Gardeners Garden

We were asked to design a garden for clients who were undertaking a major renovation and extension of their home. As keen gardeners, they wanted to retain some special plants in the garden and create a soft, abundant feel to the planting with cottage garden plants whilst having some structure elements to the scheme. The garden previously had a large tree overshadowing the space however this was removed due to disease and gave the opportunity to new planting. Storage needed to be included to replace a rotting shed. A new terrace and step was also required to integrate the new extension and level change in the garden.

We presented a scheme that took the lawn away and increased the planting area, reducing maintenance whilst still providing a permeable surface that the soft cottage style plants could be allowed to tumble over. A feature vintage style shed from Crane Garden BuildingsĀ adds character and practical storage and potting space. A series of circles creates a journey through the garden with planting delicately cutting in and out of the eye line. Topiary Purple leaved Beech trees in a tiered wedding cake style were selected to punctuate the scheme and all structure.

Rotten boundaries were replaced with traditional feather board fencing and painted with a soft neutral ‘Mouses Back’ from Farrow and Ball, a perfect partner in the garden for the soft cotswold limestone gravel. The main terrace was laid with Yellow Kota Limestone paving with London stock yellow brick detail to match the extension.

The garden is crammed with plants and shrubs throughout yet does not feel overbearing. The open central space has been dressed with a Corten steel water bowl providing wonderful reflections of clouds and a place for wildlife to drink. This garden exudes a contemporary yet timeless feel that flows beautifully with the refurbished interior and Crittal doors.

It has been an absolute pleasure to work with Garden Club London. They have provided a brilliant service from conception of the design, during the installation and with their post installation maintenance service. We are delighted with the finished result and it has greatly exceeded our expectations.
