We have pleasure in sharing with you, one of our recently completed roof garden design and build projects carried out for a residential client on the eighth floor at a converted factory in London. The site has stunning panoramic views across the city skyline and a generous footprint that allowed the creation of a main entertaining and dining space and a cosy lounge area with outdoor kitchen. Garden Club Londons award winning designers developed an attractive roof top garden with hard wearing yet aesthetically pleasing materials that will stand the test of time. Lush and colourful planting frames views and creates the sense of an urban retreat high above the rooftops.
Our landscape scope of works included removal of a rotten deck previously laid in treated softwood. We recommended Millboard ‘Limed Oak’ composite decking to our client. This is a plastic board that is set in oak moulds for a truly authentic finish that will stand the test of time. Laid on a pedestal and ‘plas pro’ frame work, the deck can dry out and allow the surfaces and roof top to breath whilst allowing water to drain away freely with no build up of green slime or deterioration. Using long, sweeping diagonal laid boards adds a sense of space as well as definition as they change direction to subtly mark the different areas of the roof garden.
Raised beds have been designed to accommodate mature evergreen Pinus ‘Cloud trees and a mix of evergreen structure and colourful herbaceous planting. Clad in batton with Farrow and Ball ‘Hague Blue’ paint, the boundaries and planter beds continue strong geometric lines that contrast with the limed oak surface to add depth to the whole space. An oversized Iroko capping provides additional casual seatings for parties and larger gatherings, with plants allowed to overhang to soften the look and add to the feel of an established garden.
A sheltered cosy seating area has been created by designing a high back hardwood bench in an ‘L’ shape to fill a corner at the rear of the roof garden with a subtle lighting design that allows way finding and highlighting of the garden features whilst not detracting from the stunning City night scape. A simple outdoor kitchen arrangement has been achieved by using a ‘Big Green Egg’ unit finished in grey and building a small bespoke kitchen unit with required storage for kitchen accessories and a hard wearing granite top that can be cleaned easily and used for food or drink preparation.
