JOHN LEWIS ROOF GARDEN OXFORD STREET
We have been working with John Lewis to create a stunning garden and restaurant concept for the rooftop of their flagship Oxford Street Store. The garden is named ‘The Gardening Society’ and is complete with kitchen garden, urban meadow and secret garden.
RESTAURANT GARDEN DESIGN
Chefs from 3 amazing restaurants will be taking a 5 week residency over summer to offer everything from homegrown rooftop salads to lobster rolls complimented with some of the best cocktails in London by ‘Background Bars’. We have included a range of edible produce in the garden as well as edible flowers and botanicals to add an extra wow to the expertly prepared cocktails on offer. The garden has two areas for enjoying food and drinks surrounded by herbs and flowers under the canopy of mature olive trees as well as pergola draped in vines for alfresco dining all summer long.
ROOF GARDEN PLANTING DESIGN
The planting design uses classic british flowers – growing above oxford street is not easy – heavy wind and rain can batter the garden and when the sun is shining it is very exposed. We have also used mature Olive trees to provide shade to the dining areas of the garden and a pergola is dripping with grape vines. We manoeuvred over 40 metres of instant 2.5m high evergreen hedges onto the roof top for impact. In other areas we spent a lot of time on the attention to detail poking succulents into nooks and crevices. Many of the planters, tools and wheel barrows were hand picked from antiques markets and salvage yards to add age and atmosphere to the project. The garden also has a fully stocked kitchen garden with edible leaves and flowers and an urban meadow designed to provide nectar rich drought tolerant plants for summer long colour.
