We recently re-visited one of our Fulham garden designs one year after planting and making the final touches. Some gardens in Fulham are fortunate enough to have good sized plots with enough room to enjoy a lawn and often a summerhouse or garden studio. There are however very small plots such as this garden of an upper floor maisonette accessed via steps, you walk down into the garden via the first floor bedroom. Initially the garden was covered in concrete slabs and a large garden dining set ate up the entire space making it seem somewhat impossible to think that anything other than squeezing around a table was possible.
FULHAM GARDEN DESIGN BRIEF
Our first focus after taking the clients brief was to produce a number of concept layouts for the clients and look at how to make the best use of space for their top priority which was to host as many friends as possible for dinner and drinks on balmy summers evenings. The other essential was to incorporate enough planting to make the space feel like a garden rather than a back yard but with low maintenance plants and enough seasonal interest thrown in for good measure. Bringing the whole scheme together would be painted contemporary horizontal batons to maximise the feeling of space and create an ‘outdoor room’.
We built bespoke seating with built in storage and also utilised the space under the steps leading into the garden which allows space for tools and outdoor accessories to be stored. A bespoke rustic steel and timber table and bench was manufactured to give a sense of transparency with thin framework and a bench that can be tucked under the table when it is not required.
FULHAM GARDEN DESIGNER
Whilst we had a clear vision for the inside of our new home, we were at somewhat of a loss as to what to do with our small garden space. After some research online looking for a designer specialising in making the most of small spaces we found Garden Club London. We loved the look and feel of the gardens pictured in GCL’s portfolio, with the mixture of contemporary structural elements combined with the softer planting. We are so happy with the end result, we keep finding ourselves wanting to sit outside whatever the weather! Tony was able to transform our uninspiring rectangular ‘box’ into a wonderful calming place to sit and enjoy. We had very clear requirements for the garden – we wanted a contemporary look with pale tones, an outside dining area for hosting friends, plenty of low maintenance greenery to add some character as well as some practical storage. Tony incorporated all these elements in to the design, mixing formal elements with some more relaxed planting and shapes whilst working to within our budget. The end result is a relaxing, private space to sit outside and feel as though you can escape from it all! I would definitely recommend Garden Club London to friends looking for a high quality garden design service.
